Supported
by UNIFEM, this publication is based on
the Convention of the Elimination of All
Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW)
- A UN Convention that has been in
implementation since 1981 as an
international bill of rights for women.
The book itself concentrates primarily
on the first 16 articles of the
Convention, which identify the
commitments made by member states once
they have ratified the Convention. It
also gives a summary of the remaining 14
articles that cover the procedure
through which a member state should
establish a supervisory Committee. The
book contains illustrations appertaining
to the clauses of the Convention that,
along with the articles themselves,
further expand upon the definition of
equality and the features of
discrimination based on sex. The book is
meant to create more extensive awareness
among the civil society of equality
between men and women, and what that
entails according to CEDAW, of which
Pakistan is a ratified member.
