Date:            2005

Abstract:

The aim of the baseline survey is to establish a baseline of student achievements against which the Faisalabad District Government can monitor and evaluate improvements in the quality of education in all Union Councils of the district. The methodology for conducting the survey was developed in view of interventions carried out under the Whole School Development (WSD) approach. Baseline Math & Urdu tools for classes kachi, one and two were developed in accordance with the specified skills in the National Curriculum. The report highlights the direct correlation of school infrastructure with student achievement and arrives at a benchmark figure of three teachers and three classrooms as a minimum for satisfactory student performance. The study recommends improved infrastructure, introducing conceptual learning and creative alternatives to rote memorization and, viewing the progressive decline in student scores with higher classes, increased monitoring of higher primary classes to introduce adequate measures to curb the trend.
