Irfan specializes in educational policy analysis, teacher education, and political analysis of education reforms. His current research interests focus on using contemporary political theory to examine professional discourse within education. He has worked as a teacher, teacher educator, and a researcher in Pakistan and the United States.

He has published his work in the Comparative International Review, Education Theory, Cultural Studies of Science Education, and Journal of Social and Policy Sciences.

Irfan has a PhD in Education on politics of mathematics education reform from Michigan State University, an M.A. in Mathematics Education from Teachers College, Columbia University and a Masters in Physics from Quaid-e-Azam University Islamabad.
